Many people, especially women, want to remove hair from different parts of their bodies to limit shaving, razor burn, or ingrown hairs. Hair removal methods are all effective at removing hair, but some methods will work better for certain people and hair types. As an esthetician, you may offer hair removal methods for your clients and will need to recommend the best option to your clients. Here are some considerations to keep in mind for each removal method and how different skin tones and hair types affect the success of hair removal.

Laser Hair Removal
One of the best hair removal methods is laser hair removal. This option is chosen often because of its popularity, but it does provide great results for most hair types and those with light to medium dark hair. One of the biggest benefits of laser hair removal is that hair often doesn’t grow back at full force for a few months. Laser works best on light skin tones with dark hair, but not as well on darker skin tones. It may also cause swelling and irritation in certain patients, especially those with sensitive skin.
Another drawback of lasers is that they require consistency to truly remove hair. While the laser will eliminate current hair growth, new hairs can pop up in between appointments. Getting consistent laser hair removal will result in less hair growth, but it often takes several appointments to achieve this.
Electrolysis
Electrolysis is a more permanent hair removal solution, but it can also take multiple months to show results. This method uses needles that are inserted into the hair follicle. An electric current is then sent directly to the follicle root. This is the most effective removal method for all hair types since it stops the growth directly at the root.
However, electrolysis has a number of side effects, including scarring, pain, and hyperpigmentation. It must also be completed by a board-certified dermatologist and electrologist to be done correctly and prevent injury to the patient. Electrolysis is an intense process and isn’t offered in every salon or medical spa.
Waxing
Waxing has been a time-tested hair removal method that has been used for many generations. Waxing can be done at home, but having a professional wax different areas is much easier to get full hair removal. Waxing only works if it is done with proper wax and enough force to pull the hair completely out of the skin. Before a waxing appointment, clients need to have at least 6 millimeters of hair growth in order for the service to be effective.
Those who have been waxed before will know that there are risks of ingrown hairs, redness, and swelling right after an appointment. Those with sensitive skin or who are prone to ingrown hairs may not be the best clients for waxing as hair removal.
Best Methods For Different Skin Tones
All skin tones are unique, so choosing the right hair removal method for your client will help them have optimal results. Helping clients understand what services are best for them and providing them with a customized plan is the sign of a quality esthetician.

For light skin tones, laser hair removal is the best service. Although some light skin tones have light hair, most of the hair has enough melanin for the lasers to target. If there is not enough color difference for a laser to detect, it may zap the skin rather than hair, especially on dark skin tones.
Darker skin tones may still be able to benefit from laser hair removal, but a different type of laser will be needed to target the darker hair on a darker skin tone. YAG lasers or ones with 1064nm will lower the risk of scarring or hyperpigmentation on dark-skinned clients. Some clients with darker skin tones find that waxing, electrolysis, or sugar waxing is effective enough for their needs.
Removal For Sensitive Skin
A method called sugaring that utilizes lemon, sugar, and water is a more hypoallergenic service that removes the hair in the direction of growth. The paste only clings to the hair, which makes it less irritating to sensitive skin, especially around bikini lines or upper lips.
Zinc-oxide-infused wax is another method that can be used on sensitive skin. This soft wax is more gentle than other waxes because it provides an extra protective barrier for the skin, lowering the risk of blemishes and irritation.
