Advanced Makeup Techniques To Elevate Your Beauty Game

Home / Archives for Master Esthetician
The Skin Institute Saint George, Utah Esthetics License

As an esthetician, you will find yourself doing makeup looks on a variety of different models. Knowing about proper makeup application, how to treat different skin types, and the proper makeup for different skin tones will make your clients feel confident and show off your skills in the best way. There are many advanced makeup techniques that can be used for weddings, magazine shoots, online media, and more. Knowing these tips will help set you apart from other estheticians.

1- Using Advanced Makeup Techniques In Different Media

While you may know how to make your model look good while they are sitting in your chair, that makeup may not always translate to other forms of media. Makeup photographed by cameras, worn on the red carpet, or on a movie set all require different products and techniques in order for their wearer to look their best.

When being photographed, makeup should be slightly heavier and accentuate prominent features (cheekbones, lips, eyes). Apply the makeup in natural lighting with a primer as your base.

For movies, TV, or video, opt for a matte foundation and set all makeup with powder. This will help prevent creasing and sweating. Use a foundation that is one shade darker than the skin tone to prevent washout. Stick to a natural lip color and apply lightly.

2- Brightening With Peach Or Apricot Toned Primers

For skin that is a little bit dull, use a brightening cream, or peach-toned products to help bring more life to the skin. Using these colored products is also great for models with hyperpigmentation to help counteract dark circles or purple tones.

3- Prep The Skin

There are many steps that makeup artists and estheticians can take to help prepare the skin before applying makeup. Removing small hairs and peach fuzz from the face will help your makeup melt into the skin. It gives you a smoother application by preventing the foundation from looking cakey.

Before applying any makeup, you can help your model have better skin by doing a light facial massage. This will help with lymphatic drainage and help stimulate collagen production, both of which help the skin look less tired.

advanced makeup techniques

Use a moisturizer that is clean and nonirritating before applying any base makeup. This will help the model have a dewy glow while helping you avoid patchy makeup.

4- Utilize Your Color Theory Knowledge

Different skin types and tones will have underlying colors. Veins, acne spots, sun damage, and dark circles are all skin ailments that you will have to work around as a makeup artist. Advanced makeup techniques include color theory because it is the best way to cancel out harsh blemishes or neutralize age spots in older clients.

Learning about the undertones of the skin, what colors compliment the eye color, and how to make blemishes disappear is important for all estheticians. Using makeup over these spots is not just about layering foundation, it requires a knowledge of the color wheel.

5- Perfect Winged Liner For Elongated Eyes

The feline eye trend is something that is popular for good reason. Elongating the eyes with liner and keeping them open is important for wedding makeup, print photoshoots, and more. As a makeup artist, it is important to practice creating the perfect winged liner, as well as learning liner types for different eye shapes.

Advanced makeup techniques that you can hone in on are using a small triangle point liner in the inner corner of the eye. Follow the shape of the natural eye to make the shape feel more open and less squished.

6- Use Powder To Make Lipstick Last Longer

Whether it’s talking, eating, or just wearing a makeup look for long hours, lipstick needs to last. Blotting the lipstick and applying a translucent powder will help the color stay on the lips for much longer. This will make the lipstick a little more matte. You may have to repeat the process a few times in order to achieve your desired results.

tips for enhancing skin appearance The Skin Institute Saint George, UT

When you work with many different people as an esthetician you will encounter many different types of skin. When dealing with varying skin types, you will need to use different skincare, makeup, and techniques to help your clients achieve the best results. If you have never applied makeup to other skin types, it can be frustrating to see that your application is not working properly. Below are some tips for each skin type and what products are best to use on these clients.

How To Determine Skin Types

Your client may have some idea about what their skin type is and can give you some hints on what works for them and what doesn’t. But other clients may not have a clue what skin type they have.

Your skin type is determined by how much oil your skin produces This amount can change over time, so your skin type may change as you age or when you start new medications, etc. Oily and dry skin are easy to notice, as oily skin will produce more oil than dry skin throughout the day. Combination and sensitive skin may be harder to diagnose.

To conduct a simple test, use a blotting sheet on your cheek with no makeup on. If the sheet picks up noticeable oil, you have oily skin, if the sheet has some oil, you can have either normal or dry skin.

Tips And Products For Oily Skin

The key for oily skin is to start with a double cleanse. This will ensure that you have removed all the pollutants from your skin and any excess oil. You should always use something that’s gentle on the skin and doesn’t strip away too much.

After cleansing, your face will need some moisturizer. Even though you have oily skin, your skin still needs moisture in order to thrive. People with oily skin will want to use a water-based moisturizer or one with a lighter base.

The key to using products with oily skin is to find balance. While you will want to reduce the amount of oil on your skin, you shouldn’t dry it out too much or your glands will get the signal to produce more oil.

tips for different skin types

When using makeup products on your oily skin, you will want to stipple the products instead of pressing them or pushing them around. Try to avoid cream makeup products and stick to powders. Use a setting powder on high areas of the face like the nose, chin, and forehead to avoid slipping.

Combination Skin Makeup Tips

Having combination skin is also a tricky balance of finding what works for your skincare routine and what doesn’t. People with a combination skin type will still want to cleanse and exfoliate.

Similar to oily skin types, you will want to avoid skincare products that are oil-based. Water-based toners, moisturizers, and primers should be used to prep for makeup.

When it comes time to apply makeup products, use flat makeup brushes or a beauty blender for cream products. Apply translucent powder to your T-zone and use fluffy brushes for powder makeup products.

Skincare Tips And Makeup Products For Dry Skin

When dealing with dry skin, good skincare products, a consistent routine, and hydrating products are all essential. Hydrating moisturizers and primers will be needed if you want your makeup to last all day.

Those with dry skin can start to have patchy areas throughout the day that makes their makeup look less than stellar. The goal is to have hydrated skin with a dewy foundation and utilize cream blush and highlighter. Balms and creams will help your skin look fresh even later in the day.

In order to avoid patchy makeup, apply products with a makeup sponge or beauty blender. Finding the right primer for your skin type will also help prep the skin before applying any products.

Makeup For Sensitive Skin Types

Skin types that are more prone to acne, skin rashes, eczema, or sunburn need to take extra care to protect their skin from free radicals and oil. Sensitive skin types should use a cleanser, a lightweight primer, and sunscreen before applying makeup. Look for skincare products with jojoba oil and niacinamide and throw out expired products as soon as possible.

Sensitive skin can benefit from using a lighter BB cream over a heavy foundation. This will prevent your pores from getting clogged and causing future breakouts.

Another tip to keep your skin from breaking out is to clean all your makeup tools and brushes often. This removes old makeup and bacteria that you continue to put on your face and cause irritation.

When applying makeup to sensitive skin, use your fingers to rub cream products together and warm them. This will help them melt perfectly into the skin. Use a full coverage foundation to cover up dark spots and blend smoothly.

After finishing your schooling to become an esthetician, you will need to start building a client base of people who continue to come back to you. Having a clientele will help you see a more consistent income and help you get your name out to more people.

Esthetician, Building clientele as an esthetician

Having clients that come to you regularly and ones that trust you will help you build a solid reputation as an esthetician. They can then more fully recommend you to others that may become loyal customers in the future. If you are struggling to know where to begin in building your client base, here are some tips that may help you.

1- Share Your Portfolio Online

Whether you build a website, post content on Instagram, or film videos on Youtube, sharing your work will build your clientele. You can utilize all of these resources to help get your work seen by more people and show your personality. When having makeup or skincare done, many people want to go to an esthetician they can relate with.

Sharing your recent work will prove your expertise and help people make a visual connection with you. People need to see something around 7 times before they make a purchase or book a service. Share your website or social media with others as often as possible.

2- Ask For Reviews To Reach New Clientele

Consumers turn to reviews in order to determine if a restaurant, business, or service is worth their money. Having satisfied customers write a review can help you improve the number of quality customers you attract.

It may feel weird to ask your clients for reviews, but you could offer an incentive for writing a review and put up flyers with a QR code to your socials, giving ample opportunity for people to say something positive. If you get any negative reviews, address their concerns immediately and work towards improvement.

3- Network With Other Estheticians

While other estheticians are working to build their clientele, working with others to help recommend you to people can be a worthwhile endeavor. For example, finding an established esthetician who already has full books could recommend you to any new clients that reach out to them.

You may also be able to get tips from other estheticians about how they built their client base from scratch or how they think you could reach new customers.

4- Follow Up With Clients After Appointments

If your clients have a great experience with you and then they never hear from you again, this can be a reason that they never book another appointment. The days or even a week after the initial appointment is a great time to reach out and ask about how they liked their service, ask for a review, or ask them to share you on their social media.

You can also create an email list that sends out automated emails with your recent deals or services. This is a great way to continue to reach clients without too much extra work on your part.

5- Market Yourself On Multiple Avenues

We have discussed multiple different ways to share your work with potential clients, which will make your business much more memorable. Even if you don’t know a lot about marketing techniques, posting your work on social media, building a basic website, and sharing your prices around your workplace or on social media are all great ways to get exposure.

Estheticians often carry a variety of products as well, this can be a great way to make some extra cash and get your name out to more people. You may be able to get purchases from people who are not your regular clients.
