Utah Esthetics License Changes: What Future Students Need to Know

If you’re considering a career in esthetics, now is an important time to understand the upcoming changes to licensing requirements in Utah. Beginning in January 2026, the state will update the way estheticians train and become licensed. At The Skin Institute, we want to help future students feel confident about their options and what these updates mean for your career.

Current Esthetics License Options in Utah (Through 2025)

Right now, Utah offers two licenses for estheticians:

  • Basic Esthetics License – 600 hours
Focuses on foundational services such as facials, waxing, makeup, and lash/brow treatments.

  • Master Esthetics License – 1,200 hours total
Builds on the Basic training with advanced modalities such as lasers, chemical exfoliation, medical esthetics foundations, advanced skin analysis, and more.

What’s Changing in January 2026

Starting in 2026, Utah will transition to a new structure:

  • The Basic license will be phased out.

  • All students will train under the unified 1,200 hour Master Esthetics license.

  • A new 200 hour Skin Permit will be introduced as an entry-level option for very limited services under supervision.

What the New 1,200-Hour Master Esthetics License Includes

The updated 1,200 hour esthetics program will ensure every graduate is fully prepared for today’s growing industry. Training will include:

  • Advanced skin analysis & ingredient knowledge

  • Corrective treatments such as chemical peels and lasers

  • Medical esthetics foundations

  • Spa therapies and holistic modalities

  • Professional and business development

Graduates will be qualified to work in spas, medical settings, wellness centers, or even open their own practice.

Why These Changes Matter

The esthetics industry is evolving quickly, with growing demand for advanced, results-driven services. Employers are looking for estheticians who can confidently offer a wide range of treatments.

By unifying to a single 1,200-hour license, Utah is aligning with national standards and ensuring every licensed esthetician is fully prepared for success.

Considering the 200-Hour Skin Permit

The Skin Permit coming in 2026 is designed as a very limited entry point into esthetics. While it may allow you to perform basic services under supervision, it is not a replacement for a full license and does not provide the same career opportunities as a Master Esthetician license.

Most students who are serious about a career in esthetics will find the full 1,200-hour program offers the skills, confidence, and credibility needed to grow long-term.
