After a long day, a night out with the girls, or a date night, you may be tempted to crash into bed without removing your makeup. However, this can have negative effects on your skin and face such as breakouts, rashes, excessive oil, dull-looking skin, and more. While there are endless reasons to follow a strict skincare routine and not sleep in your makeup, we will only share a few here. Work with your esthetician to learn more about your skin type, how makeup could impact your skin, and the best removal methods.
1- Acne And Clogged Pores
Most makeup lays on top of your skin to cover your pores. When you sleep in your makeup, these pores will not be able to “open” and could trap oils, dirt, or dead skin cells. This is what causes acne, blackheads, or bumps to appear on your skin. Anywhere that makeup has been placed or could have been rubbed while sleeping is subject to breakouts.
2- Eye Irritation
Leftover eye makeup like mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner, or eyelash glue could irritate your eyes while you sleep. Mascara and liner clog the small hair follicles and oil glands on your eyelids which could lead to infections. Removing eye makeup can also prevent pink eye, scratched corneas, and styes.
3- Irritated Skin
Just like your eyes, other sensitive skin around your face, neck, and ears can become irritated when wearing makeup. Certain types of foundation, powders, or primers could lead to dryness and irritation when worn for too long. Removing makeup before sleep will prevent rashes or itching from occurring. Even if your makeup has not irritated your skin before, prolonged wear, especially overnight, could cause abnormal reactions.
4- Premature Aging
We all know that our skin will start to age over the years, but improper skin care can cause wrinkles and discoloration at a young age. Skipping out on washing and cleansing your face can lead to the products sinking deeper into your pores. This will enlarge them and accelerate signs of aging. During the day, your skin is exposed to many types of pollutants, which age your skin. Leaving this pollution on your skin overnight will cause collagen depletion. Collagen is what helps with your skin’s elasticity. The lack of collagen will cause fine lines and wrinkles to appear.
5- Greasy Hair And Skin
Most makeup products contain dyes and perfumes, which can cause a greasy feeling after just a few hours of wear. When you sleep in your makeup, this grease can move into your hairline or transfer to your pillowcase, thus spreading the chemicals all around your face and neck area. Greasy hair and skin are not something most people want to deal with, so the extra grease can make getting ready the next morning more of a hassle.
6- Broken Lashes
Leaving mascara on your eyelashes can cause them to become brittle, dry, or fall out completely. When makeup is left on through the night, some of your lashes could break in the middle of a strand, causing your lashes to look uneven. Broken lashes can alter the look of your eyes and cause you to have shorter or straighter lashes, even when wearing makeup.
7- Dehydrated Skin
During sleep, you often shed dead skin cells and reproduce collagen that is needed to keep the skin looking and feeling its best. Dry or dehydrated skin can feel itchy and cause makeup application to look patchy. Consistently sleeping in face makeup, which could cause the skin to feel dry or coarse. Not only does your skin struggle to shed or produce natural oils, but you will not have applied any serums or moisturizers to your face before bed. When you don’t sleep in your makeup, you give your pores a chance for healthy skincare routines and the freedom to shed unnecessary skin.
8- Uneven Skin Tone
When dead skin is not allowed to shed, the color and tone of your skin can become duller. Sleeping in your makeup can also leave behind makeup residue that will look discolored over time. Makeup that settles into creases or fine lines will enhance these unsightly areas and make new makeup applications look messy. Other problems we previously mentioned like acne, rashes, or eye infections can cause uneven skin tone and redness.
